Hidden Costs of Moving: What Sydney Removalists Don’t Quote

Blogs

The hourly rate on a removalist’s website is rarely the number on the invoice. Most Sydney moving quotes leave out travel time, stair levies, disassembly fees and a second trip when the truck turns out to be too small, and the gap between the advertised rate and the final bill on a three-bedroom house can run to $600 or more.

After 25 years of quoting North Shore moves from our depots in Wollstonecraft and Asquith, these are the charges Careful Movers sees added after the truck has left.

The Seven Hidden Costs of Moving in Sydney

None of these charges is illegal or even unusual. Each one is a real cost the removalist carries, and each one is legitimate on an invoice. The problem is when it appears there for the first time. Here is what each one is, what it usually costs in Sydney, and how Careful Movers handles it.

1. Travel Time and Call-Out Fees

The most common hidden cost in Sydney is the hour you are charged before the truck reaches your door. Many removalists bill depot to depot, which means the clock starts when the crew leaves their yard in Smithfield or Botany and stops when it gets back, and a move from Chatswood to Lane Cove picks up an hour of driving at each end that has nothing to do with your furniture. Others charge a flat call-out fee of $100 to $200 instead, which comes to the same thing under a different name.

Careful Movers charges no travel fee within 25km of the Sydney CBD. That circle covers every suburb on the North Shore, the Inner West, the Eastern Suburbs and down to the airport, and the clock starts when the crew arrives at your address rather than when they leave Wollstonecraft. Beyond 25km, travel is quoted as part of a fixed price up front, not as an hour added at the end.

2. The Stair Levy

Most Sydney removalists add a flat charge per flight of stairs when there is no lift, usually $50 to $100 per flight per truck load. A third-floor walk-up in Neutral Bay with two loads is four flights charged twice, and the levy can add $400 to a move that the hourly rate said would cost $760.

Careful Movers has no stair charge on any job. Stairs still take time, and that time is on the hourly rate, but there is no surcharge per flight on top of it. The 1960s brick walk-ups through Cammeray, Cremorne and Wollstonecraft are a large part of our work, and moving furniture upstairs and downstairs in Sydney covers how a fridge comes down three flights on a stair trolley and when a balcony lift is faster than the stairwell.

3. Minimum Booking Hours

Every professional removalist in Sydney has a minimum booking, and the honest ones say so. The hidden cost is the gap between the minimum and the job. A single fridge from Pymble to Turramurra takes 40 minutes, and on a four-hour minimum you are paying for three hours and twenty minutes of nothing.

Careful Movers has a 3-hour minimum at $190 per hour. The way to get value out of it on a small job is to fill it, which is why a studio or one-bedroom move with a bed, a fridge and 20 boxes is booked on the 3-tonne North Shore Jumper rather than a bigger truck. Moving small loads in Sydney on that truck usually finishes inside the minimum with time to spare, and the crew will use the remaining time on whatever else needs shifting.

4. Disassembly and Reassembly Fees

A queen bed, a dining table and a flat-pack wardrobe do not fit through most Sydney doorways in one piece, and some companies charge $50 to $80 per item to take them apart and put them back together. On a four-bedroom house in Wahroonga with four beds, a table and two wardrobes, that is another $350 to $500 that was not in the hourly rate.

Furniture disassembly and reassembly is included in the Careful Movers hourly rate. The beds come apart at the old house and go back together in the right room at the new one. The time is on the clock, the item fee is not.

5. Weekend and After-Hours Surcharges

Saturday is the busiest moving day in Sydney and a lot of companies charge 15 to 25 percent more for it, or a flat weekend fee of $100 to $150 on top of the rate. Sunday and public holidays run higher again. Moves that have to start after 6pm because the building only allows evening lifts, which is common in the towers around North Sydney, can attract an after-hours rate that doubles the hourly figure.

Careful Movers quotes the same rate seven days. A Saturday move in Hornsby is $190 per hour, the same as the Tuesday. The one thing a weekend changes is availability, so booking early matters more than the price does.

6. Heavy and Specialty Item Charges

Pianos, marble table tops, pool tables and stone garden statues carry a flat fee at almost every removalist, and the fee is fair, because each one needs a skid board, extra straps and usually a third mover. The hidden part is when the fee is not mentioned until the crew sees the piece. A $250 to $450 piano fee announced on the driveway is a different conversation from one agreed on the phone.

Careful Movers quotes these on the call. Piano removals in Sydney are priced on the instrument and the access at both ends rather than by the hour, and marble, stone and antiques are booked the same way under specialty item moving. Tell the owner about the piece when you book and the number on the quote is the number on the invoice.

7. The Second Trip

The most expensive hidden cost is not a fee at all. It is a truck that was too small. A two-bedroom unit quoted for a 3-tonne truck that turns out to need 4.5 tonnes of space goes to the new address twice, and the second run is billed at the full hourly rate including the drive back. On a move from Mosman to Lindfield that is an extra two hours, or $380 to $500 depending on the company.

The fix is the right truck the first time. Careful Movers runs three sizes, the 3-tonne North Shore Jumper, the 4.5-tonne Unit Mover & Shaker and the 9.5-tonne Town Mover, and the owner picks the truck from the room count, the property type and a list of large items on the quote call.

How to Read a Sydney Removalist Quote?

Ask five questions before you book with anyone. Does the clock start at my door or at your depot? Is there a stair charge, and how much per flight? What is the minimum? Is disassembly included or per item? And what happens to the price if the truck is too small?

A removalist who answers all five on the phone is quoting the whole job. The 2026 removalist price guide for Sydney sets out what a one, two, three or four-bedroom move should add up to once the extras are on, so you can check any quote against it. Call 0447 00 00 99 with your suburb, your property size and a list of large items, and the owner will give you one number with nothing behind it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What hidden fees do removalists charge in Sydney?
The most common are travel or call-out time, a stair levy per flight, a minimum booking of three to four hours, per-item disassembly fees, weekend surcharges and flat charges for pianos and heavy items. A second trip when the truck is too small is the largest and least predictable.

Q. Do removalists charge for travel time in Sydney?
Most do, either as a call-out fee of $100 to $200 or by billing depot to depot so the drive to and from your address is on the clock. Careful Movers charges no travel fee within 25km of the Sydney CBD, which covers the North Shore, Inner West, Eastern Suburbs and the airport side of the city. Jobs further out are quoted with travel included in a fixed price.

Q. Do removalists charge extra for stairs?
Many Sydney removalists add $50 to $100 per flight per truck load when there is no lift, so a third-floor walk-up can add several hundred dollars to the quote. Careful Movers does not charge a stair fee on any job. Stairs are on the hourly rate through the time they take, and nothing is added per flight.

Q. What is the minimum booking for a removalist in Sydney?
Three to four hours is standard across the Sydney market. Careful Movers has a 3-hour minimum at $190 per hour. On a small job the way to get value from the minimum is the right truck: a studio move on the 3-tonne North Shore Jumper usually finishes inside three hours with time to spare for anything else that needs shifting.

Q. How do I avoid hidden costs when hiring a removalist?
Ask five questions before you book: where the clock starts, the stair charge per flight, the minimum booking, if disassembly is included or per item, and what happens if the truck is too small. Give the removalist the suburb, the property type, the floor level and a list of large items, and get the answer in writing. A quote built from that information is the number you will pay.
